In the past, trendy wasn't a word you'd associate with newborn baby clothing. My mom and her aunts used to say that little 'uns had to wear cottons (whites mainly) or woolies. But the good old days of starched whites and cottons are gone. These days, there is a lot of variety - in materials, designs, colors and styles. Modern parents are very fashion conscious and they want their children to look stunning, not plain and boring. Whether you're buying discount newborn baby clothing or designer baby clothing, you need to consider certain things so that your money is well spent. At the end of the day, if your baby is not happy in it, chances are you'll never use it.
Newborn baby clothing must be comfortable, above all else. It should have wide leg, arm and neck openings. Easy to clip on and slip off, these clothes must be of the right size to ensure a snug fit.
It is advisable to use different kinds of clothing for different purposes. For instances, a baby girl will be comfortable and pretty in a garden princess dress on her day out. But, at night, when she is ready to go to sleep, a lightweight cotton suit is the best option. Ideally, sleepwear should be flame retardant; no buttons, laces, ribbons or fancy pins and strings. Some babies do not like it when clothing is yanked over the top of their heads. In that case, buttons up front will save them a lot pain.
Clothes like rompers are ideal for small babies. Onesies are practical, because they are one-piece suits that cover the baby snugly from head to toe. Snap crotches make it easy for babies to change out of their diapers. Overalls and sweat suits are good if they are easy for baby to change into and out of.
Special care has to be paid to the fabric of newborn baby clothing. There was a reason why your mom always bought you cottons. Cotton fabric is naturally soft, pliant and natural. Synthetic material does not absorb sweat or water. If the material is not breathable, it can irritate the skin, leading to allergic rashes or peeling of the skin. So, while you really do not have to think about going organic, you will have to pay attention to the fabric.
