For many years cotton has been the choice for manufacturers as the material to use in their products mainly clothes. It was thought to be a clean,light and soft fabric. It was seen as the perfect material for adult clothes, newborn clothing, linens and bedding.
Cotton is still used today but there is a trend to now use organic cotton which has become quite popular for newborn clothing.
Cotton for many years was grown using toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. All cotton was grown this way since we were not aware of the damage we were doing to the environment.
As we became more aware of the effects that growing cotton was having on our environment and on us, a trend to go organic increased when it came to manufacturing linens, newborn clothing and bedding.
So why is going organic a trend that is on the rise?
Well for one thing it is grown without all the pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Only 100% natural ingredients such as manure are used in its production.
Environmentally, the growing of organic cotton is better in more ways than one. Insects harmful to cotton are becoming resistant to the pesticides thus causing the farmer to increase the use of these harmful chemical pesticides. It takes approximately one pound of chemicals to grow cotton while organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful chemicals.
Organic cotton is grown using methods and materials that have a very low impact on the environment. The methods used actually help build healthy soils and a healthy environment.
Once harvested it is not treated with the chemicals and the dyes that traditional cotton is. This makes for a material that is much easier on sensitive skin and less likely to trigger any allergies, just perfect for newborn clothing.
Producers must actually be certified. Their fields must test clean of pesticides and chemicals etc for three years before they are certified.
Going organic not only reduces damage to the environment but also it creates a safer environment for the worker who works in the field with the cotton.
So the next time you are out shopping and you are trying to find unique baby clothes for your baby or for a shower gift check that label. Organic cotton is very soft it is much more durable and breathable which makes it a very good material for newborn clothing.
