Parents still ask the question about whether it's best to use cotton diapers or synthetically made diapers for their infants. Even though it's quite common for most parents to go out and buy a box of diapers before they bring their little one home from the hospital, some parents are still concerned about using synthetically made diapers for their children. While most babies have no obvious health problems while wearing synthetic diapers, there are some negatives and positives to be considered if you are wondering which is best for your baby.
Cotton Diapers
Benefits: Cotton is a natural material that allows the skin to breath between changes even though the material is wet. Cotton also keeps baby's skin cool and dry, unless of course, you wait too long to change. For children who may have some form of allergy or sensitivity to plastic or synthetic materials, cotton is a great option and can also be purchased as an organic product. Cotton diapers are a one time purchase and you won't be running to the store everytime you run out of those expensive commerical diapers. There are also diaper services that will provide you with cotton diapers and pick up the diaper bucket for you each week. You don't even have to clean a messy diaper! It is only a monthly fee and the service is typically cheaper than commerical diapers.
Negatives: Cotton diapers can be more messy due to the lack of deeper absorbtion that commercial diapers allow. So you may have to change more often to keep your infant dry. If you are cleaning your own diapers as opposed to using a cotton diaper service, you will also have to rinse a messy diaper before dropping it into your diaper hamper. Then you will need to wash your diapers, fold them and put them away. Also,some type of plastic pants is an option used to cover the cotton diaper between changings to keep moisture from leaking through. Cotton diapers are definitely more work for mom.
Synthetic Diapers
Benefits: Obviously, the most important benefit is to parents because of the convenience that these diapers offer. They are disposable, water proof, easy to fit, wick moisture away from an infant and will last very long until the next change. They are a toss and go item that saves time and energy for parents.
Negatives: Because these diapers are made of synthetic materials including plastic, there is a tendency to not allow as much 'breathing' for baby's skin. Rashes can occur quickly for that reason, at times and parents need to be aware that they need to change baby regularly. Also, some infants have an allergy to plastics and some synthetic materials which may cause rashes and skin problems. These diapers are also expensive and the cost can add up to hundreds of dollars per year for one child.
As you make a decision about whether to use synthetic or cotton diapers, consider all the pros and cons for yourself as well as your baby. Diapers aren't the glamorous part of parenting, but a necessary and important part of giving your baby a healthy start to life.
